L'ultima barzelletta di Silvio - Berlusconi's last joke

On the 4th of November a press conference took place at the end of the G20 (held in France). In those days, Italian Bonds were becoming increasingly hard to sell, due to the lack of reliability of italian economy, in turn due (according to almost all the economists) both to italian high deficit and poor Growth Rate during the last 10 years.

Berlusconi was asked to explain his point of view on this situation which could lead Italy to default (like Argentina in 2001 and Greece recently). His answers brought (even) italian public opinion to perceive that a blind commander was still partying in his cabin not realizing that his boat was about to sink during the storm.

His statement, to deny the crisis in Italy, that restaurants are always full is becoming a new ironic saying.

On the right you can see italian Finance Minister.

On the 12th of November Berlusconi stepped down.

As to reliability, I must tell you that we are suffering from past Italy's lack of reliability, a prejudice against Italy due to some Italy's past behaviours... and in these days, when we havehad that issue regarding the change-over of an italian at the board of European Central Bank, we picked up some sentences, for example form our french friends "Les italiens sont toujours les Italiens" and so it's an old prejudice that has old roots. As to the reliability of thisGovernment, also from Finance Minister's point of view, I have noticed big appreciation for him from european colleagues, and, as to me, I have, with every leader that takes part in the Council of the Heads of State and Premiers, and with almost all the leaders that partecipates in the G20,a rapport that is even of friendship and in some cases of strong friendship and, so, reliabilitydoesn't involve ourselves as leaders, but probably involves Italy with its recent and less recent history.

[1.28] We are aware that, since there has been the introduction of Euro, with an evaluation of the exchange between Lira and Euro, there have been some impoverishment of a considerable range ofitalian population. Once, a family could live with 2 millions lire, nowadays with 1000 euros for afamily it is very difficult to live. With 80 euros nowadays you come back from the market with a trolley that doesn't carry many things; once, with 80 thousands lire, you used to come back fromthe market with a filled trolley. Well.. Euro...

[2.06] It's all due to the exchange Lira/Euro, that was made by that Government, with an
evaluation 1936 lira for 1 euro that We have always judged as damaging and unjust for Italy.

[2.24] We thinks really that it is... how to say... just a momentary trend from the stock markets to attack Italian Bonds... We are really a strong economy, the third in Europe, the seventh in the world... life in Italy is the life you can find in a well-off Country. This is always proven: expenditures are not dimished, restaurants are full, planes... you hardly manage to book a seat, holiday destinations during bank holiday are absolutely over-booked: look, I don't think that you notice whether, going to live in Italy, that Italy feels even something that might look like a strong crisis. It doesn't seem to me.

Journalist: - Do you think that, for the sake of Italy, this Government must go on or it'd be better if Berlusconi steps down? Sorry mr President, but... -
Berlusconi: - No, these are questions with a certain reply: let's listen to it.. - [laughters]
Tremonti: - Frankly speaking, after what has been said by the President... after what the Premier has said, I don't think there is anything else to say -

No, sono domande con risposta già certa: sentiamola... [risate]
